No frills African Club in Canning Town

Nii Swaniker

The ongoing docklands development seems to have bypassed Canning Town; it’s still the grimy, industrial town most people associate it with. Along the Barking road lies Club Afrique, unassuming from the outside. The venue opens on a small bar area, which is nothing more than a drinking den for the locals. A small kitchen beyond the bar serves home-style African food. Walking through the bar, past the kitchen, a door leads out onto a vast club floor, complete with a mini games room. It’s totally no frills, even a bit shabby. But Club Afrique excels in bringing together a mish mash of polar opposites: East End girls, Romford boys, African men in traditional clothing, and African women of all age and shapes, mingle and dance to r&b, hip-hop, naija pop
