* This restaurant is now closed * A fresh approach to the bog standard jerk chicken and rice n peas, Bamboo Grove is the latest venture from award-winning chef Anthony Cumberbatch. As good as the local Caribbean takeaway joint may be, the guys behind Bamboo Grove have taken our Caribbean favourites and created artistry by combining European and African influences to tantalizing effect. The starters of pink grapefruit crab salad and black-eyed pea complimented the sublime main dishes of three fish curry and isle tilapia. My steamed sea bass was delicately spiced and topped with a fresh salsa sauce; the side dish of spicy nut rice was aromatic and flavourful with hints of cardamom and nutmeg. As a dessert, the pear ice-cream captured the subtle sweetness of the fruit in a rich dough-like consistency.
The service is quick and friendly but unobtrusive. There is a definite sense of professionalism as you sit back and soak up the surroundings. Dark wood furnishings set off the stark white walls and the murals to sharp effect. An absolute delight, Bamboo Grove has striven for dynamism and succeeded. It will surely be a benchmark for the copycats that will undoubtedly follow.
