Dizzee Rascal Supports Column Idol

Media Trust and The Sun launched a quest across the country to find undiscovered talent, with the support of rapper Dizzee Rascal and singer-songwriter Diana Vickers.

Column Idol 2010 gives 16-21 year olds the chance to write a column for The Sun. They will be mentored by some of The Sun’s top journalists. Six entrants will be shortlisted and judged by a panel including Editor Dominic Mohan. The winner will receive the prize of having their column printed in The Sun.

Aspiring writers should visit www.thesun.co.uk/columnidol to enter, submitting a short description about their background, what they’d like to write about and why they deserve to be crowned Column Idol. The closing date for entries is midday Monday 9th August.

Dizzee, who always loved creative writing at school, says writing lyrics isn’t all that different from writing for a paper “A newspaper like The Sun is informative and entertaining so that is exactly what your column needs to be. It is the same with music, you want to entertain people but tell them something at the same time. My tip to entrants would be, if you have a strong point of view about something you should use that, and I always think it is important to put humour into whatever you write, show your passion and your personality.”

Channel 4 and Media Trust Give Young People Their First Shot at Filmmaking

To celebrate Black History Month, Channel 4 and Media Trust have joined forces to create an exclusive competition for 16-25 year olds to write, direct and produce their own short films. Ten films will be made for broadcast on Community Channel and showcased at a special screening event in London hosted by Channel 4 and Media Trust.
The ‘First Shots: Identity Uncovered’ competition launches today and aspiring filmmakers can visit www.mediatrust.org/firstshots to enter. Judges are looking for unique and creative ideas that celebrate how black culture has touched and inspired the lives of individuals and communities across the world.
The closing date for entries is midday on Thursday July 29th. A high-profile panel including Channel 4’s Director of Nations & Regions, Stuart Cosgrove, Diversity & Talent Manager, Ade Rawcliffe, Head of Stakeholder Relations, Rebecca Renfro and Commissioning Editor, Angela Ferriera will select ten finalists who will receive specialist training and the support of an industry professional mentor to bring their creative ideas to life.

The opportunity is being fronted by T4 presenter Miquita Oliver.

The son of legendary reggae star Bob Marley is set to perform at the One Love Festival in London (Fri 6 to Sun 8 Aug). Festival organiser Dan Wiltshire said:

“Julian will be representing his father memory and spirit at this year’s event. We originally put this event on to raise awareness of Bob Marley’s message three years later we actually have a Marley performing. It is something we could only have dreamed of and we feel truly honoured to have Julian Marley performing. It’s going to be a truly amazing and memorable show and we can’t wait.”

James Cameron to Collaborate with the Black Eyed Peas
